The basics

What DIAL 50 is, how it tastes and how it stacks up against your usual coffee or energy drink.

DIAL 50 is a caffeine pouch, started by students at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University. Each pouch has 100 mg of caffeine, 50 mg of L‑theanine and 25 mg of taurine, sweetened with xylitol (a common toothpaste ingredient) and flavored with cool wintergreen. It's a sugar-free dietary supplement.

There's nothing to brew, carry or chug. A pouch sits out of sight between your lip and gum, so your hands stay free, with no sugar and no coffee breath.

Every pouch pairs 100 mg of caffeine with 50 mg of L‑theanine, an amino acid found in tea leaves, for calm, clear energy*.

Yes, if you're buying them. A pouch costs $0.67 from a Single Can, or $0.35 with the Five-Pack, while a coffee-shop drink can easily run $6 and a cold energy drink a few dollars. Each pouch has 100 mg of caffeine, about an 8-oz cup of brewed coffee, with no sugar and no cup to carry.

Right now there's one: Wintergreen, crisp up front with a cool-mint finish. It's sweetened with xylitol instead of sugar, and it leaves no coffee breath.

Anyone who'd rather skip the coffee run or the energy drink: students in finals week, coders and designers with a two-hour block on the calendar, founders and sales teams on back-to-back days, and anyone with an early flight or a long drive ahead.

It isn't for everyone, though. Check who shouldn't use DIAL 50 before your first pouch.

Using DIAL 50

Tuck it, let it work, toss it. Plus timing, comfort and where a pouch fits in your day.

Tuck one pouch between your upper lip and gum and leave it there. No chewing needed, and it shouldn't sting or burn. When you're done, throw it away. Don't swallow the pouch. If one spot gets tender, switch sides.

  1. TuckOne pouch between your upper lip and gum.
  2. Leave itNo chewing, nothing to sip. Get back to it.
  3. TossThrow it away when you're done. Don't swallow it.

Most people start to feel it within minutes. How long it lasts depends on you, since everyone processes caffeine differently and its effects can stick around for hours. Skip it late in the day if caffeine affects your sleep.

DIAL 50 is gum-friendly: no sting or burn, just cool wintergreen. If you notice irritation, switch sides or take a break. If it keeps happening, stop using it and check with your dentist or doctor.

That's what it's made for. A pouch sits out of sight between your lip and gum, with nothing to sip, spill or carry, so it fits a meeting, a lecture or a long drive.

Just follow the rules wherever you are, and throw used pouches in the trash.

Everyone processes caffeine differently, and its effects can stick around for hours. If caffeine affects your sleep, plan your last pouch well before bed.

Ingredients

What's in every pouch, what each ingredient does and how 100 mg compares with your usual drink.

Every pouch has 100 mg of caffeine, 50 mg of L‑theanine and 25 mg of taurine, sweetened with xylitol and finished with cool wintergreen. Every dose is printed right on the lid, and there's zero sugar.

One pouch has 100 mg of caffeine. By the FDA's typical figures for 12 fl oz, brewed coffee has 113–247 mg, an energy drink 41–246 mg, a caffeinated soft drink 23–83 mg, black tea 71 mg and green tea 37 mg.

Actual amounts vary by brand and how a drink is made.

L‑theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. Every pouch pairs 50 mg of it with 100 mg of caffeine, a 2:1 ratio, to support calm, clear focus*.

A cup of tea naturally contains both. DIAL 50 pairs them in every pouch.

Yes. Scientists have tested the pair in placebo-controlled trials for almost two decades. In several, people who took both scored better on attention tasks* and rated themselves more alert* than on a placebo.

Those trials used their own doses, not DIAL 50, and not every trial found a benefit. Our science page lists every study we cite, with links.

Taurine is an amino acid your body already makes, with some of its highest levels in the heart. Your body uses it in everyday processes, like helping cells keep water and minerals in balance*.

It's also found in foods like scallops, mussels, clams and fish. Each pouch has 25 mg.

Yes, every pouch has 0 g of sugar. The sweetness comes from xylitol, a sugar alcohol that's also a common toothpaste ingredient. Despite the name, it's neither sugar nor the alcohol in drinks.

Yes, DIAL 50 is nicotine-free. The lift comes from caffeine: 100 mg per pouch, paired with 50 mg of L‑theanine and 25 mg of taurine, with every dose printed right on the lid.

Caffeine & safety

How caffeine adds up across your day, who should skip DIAL 50 and what the asterisks mean.

Each pouch has 100 mg of caffeine, roughly what's in an 8-oz cup of brewed coffee. The FDA cites 400 mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for healthy adults, and that counts every source: coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, pre-workout. Start with one pouch, follow the label, and use fewer if you're having other caffeine.

Caffeine adds up, so count every source: coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks and pre-workout. Each DIAL 50 pouch has 100 mg.

Follow the label directions, and use fewer pouches on days you're having other caffeine.

DIAL 50 isn't recommended for children. Don't use it if you're pregnant, trying to get pregnant or nursing, or if you're sensitive to caffeine. If you have a medical condition or take medication, talk to your doctor first. Keep your cans out of reach of children and pets.

DIAL 50 is made for people, not pets. Keep your cans closed and out of reach, and throw used pouches away where pets can't get to them.

If you think your pet got into one, call your vet.

An asterisk marks a statement about how an ingredient supports your body, like calm, clear focus*.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. You'll find this note at the bottom of every page.
